According to the latest news coming from the local press in the India’s capital city of New Delhi, four people have been arrested over accepting wagers on Tuesday’s Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings two IPL franchises.
The police said that the four were found taking illegal bets and have been associated with an illegal cricket betting racket.
Any form of gambling including sports betting is illegal in India.
The four accused were arrested from a hotel in Delhi’s Preet Vihar area on Tuesday. The police said that they had received a tip-off from their sources about illegal gambling activities taking place in the hotel.
Following the tip-off, a team of Delhi Police busted the punters and caught them red-handed. The police confirmed that they were “updating betting odds, win-loss data on their mobile phones.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast Delhi) Chinmoy Biswal, in a statement to the press, said that, “The arrested were using one phone for obtaining online rates and other phones for passing on information to the punters and seeking bets.”
Upon interrogation, the accused have said that they were into cricket betting to earn easy money and IPL season is a good opportunity.
One of the accused had been previously arrested on similar charges in 2007.
It is also found that the gang used “i-book” software to keep track of the clients and wagers.
