Vietnam Deports 35 Chinese Nationals For Alleged Involvement In Online Gambling Operations

Online gambling is illegal in Vietnam; however, there are many unlawful online gambling operatives functional in the country. In its latest crackdown on illegal gambling, the authorities have deported 35 Chinese nationals after they were found involved in online gambling operations. The illegal online gambling ring was busted in Da Nang City.

Of those deported, there are four women and 31 men. It was a joint operation between Da Nang Police and Ministry of Public Security. The deportees were handed over to the Chinese authorities at Mong Cai border gate.

Earlier on Thursday last week, the police raided six properties in different districts in Da Nang. Following the raids, 35 Chinese nationals were detained.

The group admitted to being working as a part of a Chinese enterprise dedicated to building a transnational online gambling ring in its bid to evade authorities in China.

While Vietnam has diluted its strict gambling laws by legalizing sports betting, online gambling continues to be illegal.

Earlier in April, Dang Anh Tuan, the chief inspector of the Vietnamese Information Ministry, was detained for alleged involvement in $420 million organized illegal online gambling operations. He had been assisting the gambling operators in the country by shielding them. Dang is also accused of taking undue advantage of his position.
