The lone member of the standing committee of the National People’s Congress, China’s Parliament, from Macau, Ho Iat Seng, has announced that he would be contesting the upcoming scheduled to be held on August 25.
Ho is considered to be China’s favorite and is also the present head of the legislature in Macau. He would be contesting to remain in position for his next term for five years.
The legislative head of Macau works together with the mainland authorities to formulate and implement policies in the Chinese-controlled territory.
Also known as the Mecca of gambling, Macau reaps significant revenue from gambling and casino operations. As such, for gambling operators, the election is an important event.
From policies related to the extension of gambling license and other plans related to casinos, all are jointly set by the Macau legislative head mainland officials.
The license of top gambling operators including Sands China, Wynn Macau, SJM Holdings, MGM China, Galaxy Entertainment and Melco Resorts are due expiry in 2022.
Announcing his candidacy, Ho said: “I will move to optimize people’s livelihoods and diversified development, as well as deeply listening to society.”
The elections will have no direct voting. A panel of 400 selected members will vote to decide the legislative head in Macau.
