Macau Receives A Record Number Of Tourists In May

Tourism in Macau is increasing day by day, while lawmakers have been concerned about the problems facing the local population due to excessive tourism.

The figures released by the authorities show that the number of tourists visiting Macau has increased by 25.6 percent in May 2019 when compared with the tourists visiting Macau for the same period last year.

There were a total of 1.6 million visitors who stayed overnight and 1.8 million visitors who were there just for a day visit. While the number of overnight visitors increased by 10.3 percent, those on a day visit increased by significant 43.3 percent.

However, despite tourism touching record numbers, the gaming revenue in Macau has been suffering. The dip in Macau’s gaming revenue has been attributed to the slowdown in the Chinese economy and the China-US trade war.

The April figures released by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau revealed that the year-on-year gross gaming revenue fell by 8.3 percent to 23.5bn patacas ($2.9bn). It was by far the most significant revenue drop since June 2016.

Earlier in May, the figures released by the Macau International Airport (MIA) revealed that over 800,000 passengers flew in an out of Macau in April. The traffic broke all records as the airport recorded the highest number of passengers since it started.

Calls for limiting tourism and introducing a tourism tax has also been raised in the Macau legislative assembly.
