A Mumbai cop has been arrested for his alleged involvement in an illegal gambling ring. After the police raided a hotel in Dadar, they were shocked to see a colleague, a sub-inspector of Mumbai police involved in a cricket betting racket.
The police said that they had received a tip-off about illegal gambling operations taking place in a hotel in Dadar, Mumbai.
Three bookies were also caught red-handed while taking bets on the cricket match between Australia and England in the ongoing ICC world cricket World Cup. The police said that the bookies were using a mobile App to take bets.
The raiding officers were taken by surprise when they found that, a sub-inspector, Dnyaneshwar Kharmate was also present and involved in the betting racket.
Talking to a local news agency, Mumbai Mirror, Additional Commissioner of Police for Central Region, S Veeresh Prabhu said: “Along with bookie Mikin Shah we have also placed Kharmate under arrest. They were booked under the Gambling Act and the Indian Telegraph Act.”
A police official said, “They were accepting bets through a mobile application and investigations are on to find out how long the betting was going on. We are also looking into the role of the sub-inspector who claimed he went to the hotel to get his son admitted to a school, which we do not believe.”
The sub-inspector has been arrested. Gambling is illegal in India; however, there are several illegal operators and bookmakers who operate illegal cricket betting rackets across the country.
