Kenya: Sports Betting Licenses Of SportPesa, Betin and Betway Suspended

Kenya has not renewed the sports betting licenses of top online gambling operators including SportPesa, Betin, and Betway.

Earlier last week, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i issued a directive which calls for vetting of betting companies and gambling establishments in the country.

Following the new directive, the country’s Betting Control and Licensing Board suspended the renewal of operational licenses for 19 betting companies. These gambling companies have to get clearance after the security vetting of their premises and other aspects of their operation.

According to the reports in the local media the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) had postponed renewing the licenses of eight sports betting operators following the directive issued by the Cabinet Secretary.

Other gambling operators whose licenses have not been renewed are Other notable 1xBet, Betpawa, Dafabet, Elitebet, and Premierbet.

SportPesa, Betin, and Betway, have an 85 percent share of Kenya’s sports betting market.

Earlier in May, the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), brought in a series of measures to restrict gambling adverts including a ban on outdoor gambling ads, banning celebrity endorsement of gambling products and services and also their presence in gambling ads, and also requiring all gambling advert aired on television or radio to be first approved by the gambling regulator.

However, the gambling advert ban was suspended by the high court. The High court ruled that the ban on outdoor gambling adverts is unconstitutional.
