In recent news coming from Srilanka, two police officers have been hospitalized after they were attacked during a raid on an illegal gambling den in Kalutara.
The police have confirmed that two of the attacked police officers have been admitted to Kalutara Hospital.
The incident reportedly occurred after three policemen raided the illegal gambling den and were attempting to arrest gamblers in the area. However, the gamblers attacked the police party.
One suspect has been arrested in the raid while others managed to flee. It is also being suspected that the gamblers had local support.
It is reported that the attack happened after the police tried to confiscate equipment, including a motorbike belonging to the gamblers.
The police have identified another individual involved in the attack while one is already arrested.
Further investigations are underway. It has yet not been confirmed as to how big the gambling operations were and who have been operating the illegal gambling den.
Gambling is illegal in Sri Lanka with certain exceptions. The previous Sri Lankan government under Mahinda Rajapaksa had awarded three casino licenses to attract tourists and benefit from the gaming industry.
However, the current government canceled all three casino licenses awarded by the previous administration.
