23 Arrested Over Illegal Gambling In George Town, Malaysia

Penang police have arrested a tricky group of gamblers who would operate illegal betting and gambling activities in beach areas.

On Thursday night, police raided a makeshift gambling venue at a beach area in Tanjung Bungah in George Town, Malaysia, and arrested 23 gamblers including the organizers.

The organizers would set up tents near seaside locations hidden from public view to run their illegal gambling operations. Moreover, to avoid the authorities and the police, they also changed their position every two or three days.

Datuk Zainol Samah Penang CID chief said that they had received a tip-off and that the organizers were already under watch before the raid.

Talking to the press, the CID chief said: β€œIn the raid, police arrested 21 men and two women, aged between 20 and 70s. Some tried to escape but were unsuccessful because we had surrounded the place.”

β€œPolice also seized gambling paraphernalia including 98 pieces of chips of various colors, a whiteboard, chairs, baskets, and calculators,” he added.

The raiding team was led by state anti-vice, gaming, and secret societies chief DSP Akmal Yahaya.

He also confirmed that police seized RM65,677 in cash during the operation. It is also amongst the biggest operations against open-air illegal gambling in the region over the past year.
