Germany Strict On Online Casino Ties Of Licensed Sports Betting Operators

Gambling operators seeking licenses for online sports betting in Germany will have to show that they are not associated with online casino operators or affiliates offering online casino products to locals.

Regional Council of Darmstadt in the German state of Hesse issued guidelines for interested parties applying for a sports betting license in the country.

The guidelines explicitly mention that the licensed online gambling operators in Germany would not be allowed to “operate or broker unauthorized gambling in Germany, either themselves or through affiliated companies, once the license has been granted.”

According to a federal gambling treaty approved in March this year, gambling operators can apply for a sports betting license in Germany. The licenses are expected to be issued January 1, 2020, and would be valid until June 30, 2021.

Earlier in June, the state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) issued the country’s first federal blocking order to a payment service provider. The move was aimed at restricting stop transactions between German gamblers and overseas online gambling sites.

Responding to the ban, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) warned the German authorities.
The association urged german authorities to rethink their decision and to allow payments as usual until a new regulatory framework is developed.
