According to the latest reports from South Korea, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency held a press conference to announce that the ex-CEO of YG Entertainment, Yang Hyun-suk and former Big Bang member Seungri have been booked on charges of consistent gambling and gambling overseas.
According to the gambling rules in South Korea, it is illegal for people to participate in gambling in the country and even outside the country where it is legal. However, normally if caught gambling overseas it is likely that one gets away with a warning.
It is reported that Yang and Seungri had been involved in gambling a large sum of money overseas which clearly violates the South Korean gambling laws. As such the duo may land in trouble as the police have already confirmed that they are booked over charges of gambling. The investigation is ongoing.
Several South Koreans are also involved in gambling operations overseas. However, the Korean authorities are strict with Koreans gambling in foreign countries.
Earlier in July, the police in Seoul, South Korea, arrested 37 South Koreans after they were extradited from Malaysia on charges of illegal online gambling. The National Police Agency had confirmed that the 37 suspects arrested were involved in operating illegal gambling websites in Malaysia with stakes worth billions.
There are several foreigner-only casinos in South Korea. South Korea’s foreigner-only casinos have posted a strong performance for 2018. The latest figures released by the National Gambling Control Commission revealed that revenue from foreigners-only casinos jumped from KRW1.21 trillion in 2017 to KRW1.63 trillion ( US$1.38 billion approx) in 2018.
