SkyCity Casino Workers Continue Strike For Consecutive Weekend

Skycity Casino workers have announced that they would continue their strike for the second and consecutive weekend. The casino workers are demanding better pay rates for weekend and night allowance.

Unite union’s national secretary, Gerard Hehir, has said that no progress has been made in terms of negotiations with the SkyCity casino.

Hehir also said that the union members have voted to strike from 10pm tonight until 8am Monday morning.

“We’ve had about 50 to 60 new members in the past week, which is a really good sign – people who actually weren’t previously part of the union have been signing up saying ‘yup, we want what you’re fighting for and we’re keen to help’.”

The campaign is called “Back to the Weekend” and strives to fight for the rights of casino employees to choose to spend their weekends with family and friends.

“The basic problem is that SkyCity needs most of its workers at weekends and nights and makes most of its income during that time – but prefers to use the ‘stick’ rather than the ‘carrot’ to get staff at these times,” said Hehir.

Skycity officials have said that they have offered a 6 to 25 percent increase in wages over the next two years.

Recently, SkyCity Entertainment Group launched its Malta-based online gambling site, The website is being managed by the Malta-based Gaming Innovation Group.
