BCLC Incentivizes Retailers For Selling More Lottery Tickets

The British Columbia Lottery Corp. (BCLC) offers incentives and perks to retailers selling more and more lottery tickets as it generates most of its revenue from the conventional scratch-and-win lottery tickets.

Last week, in an event organized by the BCLC on September 3, Richmond retailer Verna Holmes received a $60,000 cheque as a reward for selling winning tickets.

The move has been criticized by social groups and those combating increasing gambling addiction. Incentivizing lottery retailers for selling record lottery tickets can trigger gambling addiction.

It should be noted that BCLC provided more than $1.4 billion in profit to the B.C. government last year. However, the Bonuses offered by the corporation to encourage and reward retailers to sell more tickets is being questioned.

BC Lottery Retailers have also been infamous for not asking IDs from customers while selling the lottery tickets. In the past three years, the British Columbia Lottery Corporation has warned several lottery retailers for not seeking IDs from perceivably underage customers.

According to a report, β€œin the fiscal year 2017-18, 1,040 mystery shops found 636, or 61 percent, of retailers, failed to ask for ID. And in the 2018-19 fiscal year, 701 mystery shops caught 451, or 56 percent, of retailers who failed to ask, for a three-year total of 1,659 retailers.”
