Lawmakers in Georgia are considering gambling expansion in the state to fund the HOPE scholarship program. The state aims to gross additional funds through legalized and expanded gambling regime.
It should be noted that the licensed casino gambling industry has chipped in consistently increasing revenue; however, the traditional horse racing industry has given disappointing results. According to experts and those familiar with the matter, legalizing sports betting in the state would also not bring in any significant revenue growth.
As such, the lawmakers are exploring options to expand casino gambling or horse racing in the state. However, any gambling expansion would require Georgians to approve a constitutional amendment.
Though in opposition to the move to expand gambling in the state Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has said that he would not block the move for an amendment through voting as long as the gambling expansion program brings in additional revenue benefits the HOPE program.
Those in favor of the gambling expansion in the state opine that it would create thousands of jobs and bring millions of dollars in additional revenue to fund the HOPE Scholarship.
Several US states have opted for gambling expansion and have legalized sports betting after the US Supreme court legalized sports gambling last year.
