QLD POKER CHAMP TAKES THE STAR’S FIRST CELEBRITY POKER TROPHY
HOME grown Queensland poker gun Alex Lynskey has taken out the trophy at The Star Gold Coast’s Celebrity Poker Tournament overnight.
The Brisbane based World Series of Poker star went head to head with a host of big name special guest players including former Titans NRL captain and The Star Poker Gold Coast ambassador Scott Prince, DJ Havana Brown, American comedian Arj Barker, boxing champion Jeff Horn, fellow Australian poker champion Joe Hachem, Channel Nine sports presenter Erin Molan, local ironman TJ Hendy and Hit 90.9 FM’s Ben Hannant and Dan Anstey.
The event was the curtain-raiser for the first World Poker Tour (WPT) Australia tournament which kicks off at The Star Gold Coast today and runs until October 7.
WPT anchor Lynn Gilmartin and NRL player and Footy Show presenter Beau Ryan hosted the tournament, which raised $10,000 for The Star’s charity partner Surf Life Saving Queensland.
Alex said it was a fun-filled night, and all celebrity guests brought their A-game.
“It was an enjoyable night of poker!” he said.
“I was able to take a few more risks in the more relaxed atmosphere, and it certainly paid off.”
“As they say – better lucky than good!”
The Star Gold Coast Chief Operating Officer Jess Mellor said the event was a fantastic way to launch The Star’s sparkling new poker space.
“We are incredibly proud to host Australia’s first WPT event here at The Star and it was fantastic to host these amazing celebrities to play our first charity tournament at Queensland’s new home of poker,” Jess said.
“Last night was a lot of fun, there was an incredible energy in the room and our special guests really got in to the game, and it was the perfect opener to what will be an exciting 11 days ahead.
“I want to thank everyone who played and brought their best poker face out for a good cause. Surf Life Saving QLD is a charity that is particularly important to us here on the Gold Coast.
“We have a long standing, 25-year relationship and it was fantastic to be able to have Alex Lynskey help us donate $10k to an organisation that does so much for our city.”
The event celebrated the unveiling of The Star Gold Coast’s new dedicated poker space which features 12 permanent poker tables and nine tournament tables all boasting the latest in poker technology including bespoke IT and registration systems allowing players to register for cash games via SMS.
The full WPT Australia Festival takes place from September 27 to October 7, with 10 events on the schedule and buy-ins ranging from A$330 to A$5,000. The WPT Main Event buy-in is A$2,500 with an estimated prize pool of more than $1 million.
In the lead up to the WPT Main Event, The Star will also play host to a poolside VIP Player’s Party on Saturday, October 5 which will see celebrity guests and some of Australia’s best poker players attend.
