Gambling and hospitality giant Wynn Resorts is no longer pursuing a casino license in Osaka, Japan making it slightly smoother for MGM Resorts International.
Wynn Resorts has confirmed that they are focussing on the Kanto area. However, MGM continues to be the top contender for the Osaka casino license.
In a statement earlier this week, the casino operator said: “We announced our ‘Osaka First’ strategy and have not wavered from that plan. We have always had confidence in our position, as what we will bring to Osaka is something only MGM Resorts can deliver.”
Meanwhile, a statement from Wynn resorts read: “Wynn Resorts is grateful for the many months of positive dialogue we have enjoyed with the City of Osaka and its citizens, and we appreciate the gracious hospitality we have received from them,” according to the statement.
Earlier in the year in August, US gambling giant Caesars Entertainment Corp. confirmed that they are no longer pursuing a casino license in Japan.
The company officials said that Caesars is not looking to expand in the newly regulated Japanese market with a casino license and that focusing on its current business is its priority.
According to Fitch Ratings, MGM is the top contender for the Japanese IR license in Osaka. MGM Resorts International, Genting Singapore, and Galaxy Entertainment Group are in the race for a casino license in Osaka.
