Strict Restrictions On Gambling
Virginia is amongst the few US states that do not allow casino gambling. However, there have been attempts and talks about legalizing casinos in the state, it is yet to meet some success of sorts.
The proponents of gambling expansion plans in the state advocate that the casino gambling industry in the state would not only help create new jobs but will also bring in additional tax revenue to the state.
Those who hold against even the slightest idea of having a casino in the state are worried about the social harms associated with gambling. They say that it would lead to an increase in gambling addiction and would also trigger casino-related crimes.
However, with the voices to have a liberalized gambling regime is gaining grounds and it is expected that this year, Virginia could legalize casinos.
Experts say that Virginia would also be debating sports gambling. In the US several states have legalized and launched sports betting operations since the US Supreme Court lifted a decade-long ban on sports gambling in 2018.
At present, there are 20 states that have legalized sports gambling and 13 have launched sports betting operations. The US sports betting market is also expected to become the biggest by the end of 2020.
