USA – It is reported that sports betting in the state of Michigan will launch this year, expected to be sometime in March 2020 for the official launch.
The launch applies only to offline sports betting and residents of The Great Lakes State will be able to place a wager on a variety of sports at local casino establishments.
Online sports betting is expected to arrive some 12 months later with a launch pencilled for 2021 as the state looks to establish its offline legislation and regulations first.
Public Relations and Communications specialist for the Michigan Gaming Control Board since 2014 Mary Kay Bean commented on the importance of finalising rules for online betting and ensuring that the state can walk before it runs:
“We are at a very early stage of this process… The agency must establish several sets of administrative rules, which pass through many levels of review.”
Mary Kay Bean elaborated on the importance of local government working closely with other organisations to ensure the proper legal measures are implemented:
“The timing of implementation depends not only on our agency, but also on decisions other departments, agencies, and the legislature make along the way”.
Casino establishments in other US states work closely with sportsbook providers to link together a working platform and partnership so that the venues are tailored to sports betting enthusiasts along with casino patrons.
It is reported that in anticipation of the launch date, MGM Grand Detroit has already put measures in place to tailor its venue with a dedicated sportsbook area.
MGM Grand Detroit is a luxury casino and hotel resort, which opened its doors in mid 1999. It was the second luxury casino resort in a state capital city outside of Las Vegas.
Mary Kay Bean explained the process of how other establishments can implement the same facilities:
“Timing will depend on how quickly we receive applications, can approve the casinos’ internal controls, and are able to issue required licenses”.
Reportedly, two major organisations in the sports betting industry; Stars Group and PointsBet are negotiating a deal with gaming operators in Michigan.
