It has been reported today that New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore is favourite to win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award this Saturday at the annual NFL honours celebration.
Gilmore, who has received endorsements from Ty Law and Richard Sherman, was joint first in the highest number of interceptions this season with a total of six along with a record 20 pass breakups.
Ty Law, a former NFL cornerback who won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots said:
“I think he deserves it 100 percent. This is an opportunity for him. He deserves to do something no other Patriots defensive back has ever done, including myself. I don’t think it should even be a race, to be honest with you. He played consistently from the first game throughout the season. No one has done it better.”
Richard Sherman, a Californian-born cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers shared similar sentiments on Gilmore’s talent:
“It’s been outstanding, man. I’m just happy that he’s getting the credit that he deserves. He’s had great years before, and he was stuck in Buffalo. And it didn’t matter how great he played.
“I think everybody who plays the position at least watches film of the other guys’ play and sees their technique and sees what tricks and what techniques that they’re using to be successful. And he’s been playing in a really tough defense, because they have been running a ton of Zero. It’s kind of a feast-or-famine defense. And he’s stood up incredibly well.”
The San Francisco 49ers are in action this Sunday as they take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the 54th Super Bowl.
Sportsbooks around the world have the Chiefs as slight 8/11 favourite compared with the 49ers at odds of 11/10.
