Japan – It has been reported today that an American casino resort developer, MGM Resorts International, is leading the way as the named bidder for an integrated resort in Osaka, a designated city in the Kansai region of Japan with a population of more than two and a half million.
Government ministers in Osaka have made the announcement following pre-planning criteria and discussions to become one of three license holders for the development and operation of an integrated resort. The news follows the gambling legalisation announcement in Japan by the national government and is awaiting bid proposals from a number of cities.
The development of an integrated resort in Osaka is said to include proposals for a casino, retail outlets, meeting rooms, conference centre and arcade venue.
Osaka is one of the largest cities in Japan and is reportedly a front-runner to become one of three license holders for legal gambling in the East Asian nation, along with Tokyo and Yokohama.
A statement released today by the local government said that a consortium had been established between MGM Resorts International and Orix Corp; a Japanese diversified financial services group headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, and Osaka, Japan.
It is reported that the local government of Osaka will make the decision in the middle of 2020 on who will win the project.
It is estimated that the casino market in Japan, once legalised, could be worth somewhere in the region of twenty billion dollars.
