World Poker Tour Returns To The Star Gold Coast In April

The World Poker Tour® (WPT) is set to return to The Star Gold Coast’s world-class poker space with three major tournaments across 2020 and 2021.

The Star announced a major two-year partnership with WPT overnight, which will see the first WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast Festival run 10 events over 11 days in April 2020 and 2021, while the WPT
Australia Festival returns to the iconic property in September this year.

It follows the success of Australia’s first ever WPT Festival, held at The Star in September 2019, which saw a record-breaking poker prize pool for Queensland at the time swell to more than $3.1 million and more than 3000 participants entering across the tournament.

Angelica Hael, VP of Global Tour Management for the World Poker Tour said the relationship with The Star Gold Coast continued to flourish and these three festivals would add more reasons for loyal players to visit the poker epicenter.

“It brings me great joy to see poker continue to thrive in my native country and bring the WPT Champions Cup to Australia in Season XIX,” she said.

“Following the success of last year, we are excited to secure these key events at The Star across the next two years. We can’t wait to return this April and September.”

Unveiled just last year in timing with the first WPT Australia event, The Star’s new poker zone is set to increase capacity from 14 to 25 poker tables for this year’s Festival, all boasting the latest in poker technology including bespoke IT and registration systems allowing players to register for cash games via SMS.

Chief Operating Officer Jess Mellor said The Star Gold Coast had earned its reputation as the Queensland home of poker following the success of last year’s event, and the new tournaments would see The Star Poker Gold Coast facility floor plan expand to meet demand.

“The Star Gold Coast and the poker community of Australia warmly welcomes back the WPT for WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast and the rapidly approaching WPT Australia Festival,” she said.

“Australia is one of the top nations for poker in the world, and its popularity continues to grow in Queensland.

“Last year’s event showed the poker world that The Star Gold Coast is a must-visit poker destination and we look forward to showcasing our property to more players from around the globe.”

The first WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast event will run at The Star Gold Coast from April 24 to May 4, 2020 with buy-ins from $1100. WPT Australia Festival, incorporating WPT DeepStacks Australia and the WPT Australia Main Event will run from September 24 to October 2, 2020.

The Star will then play host to the WPTDeepStacks Gold Coast Festival from April 23 to May 3, 2021.
