Competitive eating is to return this Friday 17th April 2020 as the first sporting event since the Covid-19 pandemic suspension as Major League Eating announces the compete from home BetOnline Quarantine Challenge.
Major League Eating is an organization that organises professional competitive eating events and television specials. Competitive eating, otherwise known as speed eating, is a ‘type of sport in which competitors compete against each other to consume large quantities of food in the shortest time possible’.
The event is a bracket-style elimination eating tournament sponsored by BetOnline.ag; an online sportsbook that has been designed to offer opportunities to wager in many other markets alongside mainstream events, such as politics and entertainment.
George Shea, MLE Chairman and co-host of Quarantine Challenge with MLE President Rich Shea commented on the event:
“While there has been substantial discussion about which professional sport would be the first to return – with baseball, basketball, golf and MMA all floating recent potential return plans – competitive eating is first to come back. It is a powerful statement of American resilience.”
‘BetOnline.ag has long served as the premiere online sports betting destination and, given the current lapse in sporting activity, the organization felt that partnering with MLE to create the Quarantine Challenge would create a fun way to fill the competitive void being felt by bettors and sports fans alike.’
Brand manager at BetOnline Dave Mason said:
“We all find ourselves in an unprecedented space. Unfamiliar problems often require unfamiliar solutions. Hence the birth of this event. Many are familiar with the July Fourth event, but few realize that these athletes compete regularly and treat this as an actual sporting league. Our goal is to showcase the talents and skills possessed by the competitors while offering fans the chance to cheer on their favourites.”
The competition will feature $11,500 in prize money, with $5,000 going to the winner. In addition, MLE and BetOnline.ag will donate $10,000 to Feeding America.
Feeding America is a United States–based non-profit organization that is a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that feed more than 46 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community-based agencies.
