AGEM Welcomes Nevada’s Move To Relax Age Restrictions For Employees In The Gaming Industry

In a statement to the press released Thursday, the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM), has welcomed the Nevada Legislative Assembly’s move to approve Assembly Bill 221 which calls for relaxation in restrictions for 18-20 years old who want to work in the gaming industry.

AGEM is a non-profit international trade association representing manufacturers and suppliers of electronic gaming devices, lotteries, systems, table games. The 170 member companies, affiliated with the trade association, are spread across 22 different countries.

As per the existing laws, gaming companies cannot take employees in the age group 18 to 20 years. The laws in Nevada prohibit anyone under 21 to be employed as a “gaming employee” with the only exception being ‘casino count room staff.’

The new bill would allow legal status to those between 18 to 20 years and are working for slot machine, systems, table game, and component suppliers.

The new bill is pending Governor’s approval, following which it would be enacted as law with immediate effect.

Marcus Prater, Executive Director of AGEM, said: “We are keenly interested in workforce development and employment opportunities within the state and Assembly Bill 221 will take us all in a positive direction.”

“The gaming suppliers are further interested in hiring those in the 18-20 age group in a variety of company department categories, as well as being able to offer internships to college students. The opportunities could run the gamut from visionary young adult game designers to graduates from our state’s technical schools to math wizards who are all seeking a unique career path previously unavailable to them,” he added.

The new bill was proposed by Assembly Judiciary Chairman Steve Yeager and saw widespread support from across the spectrum. The prominent supporters of the new bill are the Nevada System of Higher Education, the College of Southern Nevada, the Washoe County School District, Clark County School District and the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce.

According to Applied Analysis, a Nevada based research and analysis firm, gaming operations from companies based out of Nevada or operating in the state, generate annual revenues to the tune of $11.7 billion and employ approximately 29,000 people.
