Amidst Exodus Of Chinese From Cambodia After Online Gambling Ban, Sihanoukville Authorities Warn Building Owners Of Legal Action

With thousands of Chinese nationals leaving Cambodia after a complete ban on online gambling in the country, the authorities in the Cambodian gambling hub Sihanoukville have warned 10 building owners of legal action as they have failed to comply with the demolition orders issued earlier.

Most of the buildings which are ordered to be demolished house casinos and gambling facilities.

According to the estimated figures released by the Cambodian Ministry of Interior, about 120,000 Chinese nationals have left the country since online gambling ban was officially announced. The Ministry said that about 6000 Chinese nationals have been leaving Cambodia every day since the ban was declared.

The Phnom Penh Post, reports that Preah Sihanouk Provincial Governor Kuoch Chamroeun issued demolition orders to 14 building owners in Sihanoukville last month after they were deemed unsafe. However, only four have complied so far.

“We have also warned them that we will take action if they do not tear them down. We will take legal action, and enforce the court’s verdict. The owners will face further penalties,” said spokesman Kheang Phearum.

“The provincial administration is resolute in its stance that no one should obstruct [the legal process]. These buildings – which are in violation of technical standards – must be removed.”

Earlier in June, a seven-storey under-construction building collapsed in Cambodia’s casino town of Sihanoukville which killed 28 people.
