The origins of gambling are as ancient as man himself and consists of the wagering of real money on an event that has an uncertain outcome.
Each gambler has a system that they use to help them win based on their sense of skill and intuitions.
For those who feel that their skills are better than most, will enter big money tournaments held by casinos and compete against others for major prizes and big wins.
The most famous casino tournament that you might have heard of is the world series of poker tournament or WSOP. This event which is in Vegas has been around since 2004.
The tournament is famous because it is often on TV and the winners walk away with millions of dollars and bragging rights.
However, what you may not be familiar with is that by 2020. The WSOP is a massive 101 event series with many variations of poker in play.
Below we will talk more about some of the best casino tournaments that you can find.
The game of roulette is the queen of all Casino games. Many people claim that it was a game made by a Chinese monk of the 14th century and imported to the west by Jesuit missionaries.
The French scientist and philosopher Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), erroneously believed to be the inventor of this game. Played an important role (perhaps unintentionally) to its development, thanks to his scientific contributions to the theory of probability.
Roulette comes from a “little wheel” in French and consists of a layout of 37 numbered spaces from 0 to 36 (European roulette) as opposed to the American roulette with 38 spaces, as it contains the 00 (double zero) as well as the 0.
One of the biggest tournaments of this game is in Malta every year in April, and it’s known as the European Championship of Roulette, which comes with prize money totaling in the thousands of dollars.
The game of BlackJack is a mix of strategy, skill, and fortune where the gambler has to make a choice always: to play or to stand, to double down or not, to split or not.
The calculation of probability is essential here, and an appropriate game strategy can provide a mathematical advantage over the dealer (the casino), who always adopts a game tactically as a priority.
BlackJack, which many still call by its original name “Vingt et un” (twenty-one), originates in France around the 17th century. It became prevalent in England and was first introduced into the United States around 1910 and quickly began to spread all over the country.
The rules of BlackJack are relatively simple to learn. The dealer (bank) faces one to seven players. The casino uses multiple decks of French cards, ranging from 2 to 9.
The cards retain their nominal value except for the ace that may take on an amount of either 1 or 11, at the player’s discretion. All face cards have a value of 10. The primary aim of BlackJack is to win a hand with a value close to twenty-one without overstepping.
Any hand more than twenty-one is a “bust” and immediately makes the player to lose.
Some of the biggest BlackJack tournaments are the World Series of Blackjack (WSOB), Vegas Hilton’s Million Dollar Tournament, Ultimate Blackjack, and The Legends of Blackjack Tournament.
Three card poker
The three-card poker game is relatively simple to play, and its strategy is easy too. The game starts with the first player making a bet or “ante” equal to the table’s given minimum.
Then, after all the players on the table have made their bets, the casino live dealer exposes three cards. After looking at their hand, players have to choose whether to go on playing or fold.
If the player decides to fold, he then forfeits the Ante wager, and the round ends. If players want to continue playing the hand, they must make an additional bet (raise) equal to their Ante bet.
Such a decision only based on the three cards the players have since they have no chance to change them.
After the players have made a raise, the dealer exposes his three-card hand. He needs to qualify with a hand of queen or higher for play to continue.
The game of three-card poker offers you the opportunity to play “Pairs plus” too, where you can make an additional bet in a spot marked Pair Plus.
The tournaments are usually in a round-robin format with a predetermined bet in each round. And the dealer counting the person with the most chips at the end of the series. Moreover, the winner is whoever has the most winning rounds.
Texas Hold ’em
Texas Hold ’em is the most popular poker variant. You can play it with 2 to 10 players while one player acts as the dealer on the table. They call this position the “button” and it usually rotates clockwise after every hand that they play.
The two players on the left side of the main dealer are the small blind and the big blind: these two positions require forced bets of a predetermined amount. Each player will get two cards that are face down, called hole cards.
The main aim of Texas hold ’em game is to combine their hole cards with the community cards so one can make the best possible 5-card poker hand. At the end of the hand, the player with the highest-ranking combination wins the pot. Which is now bigger due to the blinds plus the other players’ wagers.
The Pre-flop is the first round of bets. The player usually to the left of the big blind acts first before the flop; he can choose to either accept the same amount of the big blind, make a raise or surrender the hand.
The next player does the same and the same goes on with the other players.
The WSOP that we mentioned earlier is one of the biggest and famous of Texas hold ’em tournaments.
