California: Coalition Of Native American Tribes Favor Legalization Of Sports Betting

Sports betting may soon be coming to California. A coalition of Native American tribes has called for legalization of sports betting at Indian gaming casinos and licensed racetracks in the state for 2020 ballot.

The group of eighteen tribes, led by Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians filed papers with the state attorney general’s office seeking a title and summary for legalizing sports betting.

According to the proposed amendment by the tribes, wagering on sporting events including college and professional sports would be allowed at tribal gambling facilities. However, high school sporting events are not included.

In a statement, commenting on the new initiative, Mark Macarro, chairman of Pechanga, said: “Californians should have the choice to participate in sports wagering at highly regulated, safe and experienced gaming locations.”

The proposed amendment would also allow for 10 percent of tax revenue on sports betting operations. The fund raised would go towards social causes including public safety, mental health programs, education and regulatory costs.

“We would be disappointed at any initiative that allowed sports betting but that didn’t include card clubs,” said Kyle Kirkland, president of the California Gaming Association.

Over 20 US states have already legalized sports betting since the US Supreme court lifted the moratorium on sports gambling last year.

Tribes supporting the initiative are Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the Barona Band of Mission Indians, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.
