Court Revokes Greek Lottery Operator OPAP’s Online Sports Betting License

The highest administrative court in Greece has revoked the online sports betting license of lottery and betting operator, OPAP.

The decision to strip OPAP of online sports betting license though taken in July will now come into effect following the court’s order. The move to strip the lottery operator of its sports betting license is also being seen as a step forward towards the shaping of new regulations concerning the country’s online betting industry.

Earlier, the Austrian operator Goalbet (GLB GmbH) questioned the legality of the online sports betting offerings of OPAP. While there were 24 other operators who had to go through the exact same licensing process to secure an online betting license, their license had been revoked while OPAP became the monopoly.

Following the court’s ruling, OPAP’s online sports betting operations have been deemed to be illegal and the company would cease to offer online sports wagers from immediate effect.

Earlier last month, Hard Rock International, confirmed that they are in the race for an integrated casino license in Athens.

Hard Rock has said that they have been working on their proposal for over a year and a half and confirmed that if they are awarded the project it would take them about 24-26 months to complete the construction work.
