The Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) posted that the gross gaming revenue in Denmark is up 5.7% year on year to DKK 9.74bn ($1.46 billion) in 2018.

In 2017 the gross gaming revenue (GGR) was DKK 9.22 billion which increased by DKK 520 million in 2018. The increase in the revenue is attributed to the 2018 FIFA World Cup event held between June 14 and July 15 last year.

The majority of the increased revenue comes from sports betting as the sector registered revenue increase from DKK2.33bn in 2017 to DKK2.53bn in 2018. With the world cup on, the maximum revenues came for the month of June and July when the total revenue grossed was DKK 245 million and DKK 246 million respectively.

Online casino revenues also increased by 19.5 percent to DKK 2.16 billion. In 2017 revenues from online gaming were only DKK 1.81 billion. Online casinos represent 22% of the entire gambling market in Denmark.

Despite the significant increase in revenues from online casinos and sports betting the Lotteries win the race for grossing the maximum revenues. The sector is worth 31% of the entire Danish gambling and casino market. The revenue from Lottery services was up 6.6% to DKK 3.30 billion from DKK3.11bn in 2017.

A notable trend that has emerged from the figures posted is that Danish players preferred online gambling more than land-based venues. This made online gambling revenues chip in 54.5% of the entire gambling revenue – a 3% rise from the revenues generated in 2017.

This year the Danish Gambling authority has been strict on ensuring consumer protection and has taken steps to make sure all gambling operators comply with the existing regulations.

Last month, in March, the regulator also introduced a new code of conduct for gambling operators in the country. The regulator had also blocked access to 25 sites violating the regulations.

Spillemyndigheden has slapped heavy penalties on gambling regulators who offer online gambling services to Danish players without securing due permissions.
