Dutch Gambling Regulator Slapped Gambling Operators With Record Fine In 2019

Tackling the issue of unlicensed gambling operators catering to local customers was something that the Dutch gambling regulator was battling throughout 2019. The country’s gambling authority, the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) issued a record amount of fine in 2019 while they are planning to launch the remote gaming and gambling market.

According to the figure released by the gambling regulatory body the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), it had issued a total of €3.5m in financial penalties in 2019 alone. The figure represents the double of what was imposed on gambling operators back in 2018. In 2018, the gambling regulator had slapped operators with a fine totaling €1.7m.

The gambling authority also said that about 10 foreign-based gambling operators holding international licenses were fined this year. The fine was imposed as the online gambling operators continued to offer betting products to Dutch customers despite restrictions and warnings from the gambling watchdog.

The top gambling operators that were charged with the biggest penalties include the top names in the global betting industry like 1xBet, LeoVegas, the Kindred Group’s Unibet brand, Casino.com, and The Stars Group’s PokerStars.

The KSA chief, René Jansen said that the idea behind issuing bigger penalties on top internationally licensed operators was to set examples and make it clear for other operators as well.

He also said that not all gambling operators that were slapped with a penalty ended up paying them. However, Jansen warned that those who fail to ensure compliance with KSA’s penalties will be termed “unreliable” and that would mean that the operators will effectively find it nearly impossible to get a gaming license in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands is expected to launch its online gambling market by mid-2021.
