GambleAware’s Unique Barbershop Tour Will Create Awareness About Compulsive Gambling

GambleAware has launched a unique initiative to create awareness amongst young men about gambling harms and compulsive gambling. It has launched a nationwide mobile barbershop tour as a part of their “Bet Regret” safer gambling campaign.

The mobile barbershop tour will have specialized barbers who would educate men about gambling-related harms while offering free hair cut. It will make them aware of the problems that one could face due to compulsive gambling.

Starting in Manchester, the tour will strategically move to cities and areas with a high number of sports bettors and those hosting sporting events. It will also focus on university and younger population. Through the tour, young people will be made aware of Bet Regret.

Nick Maclure, one of the specialized barbers, moving with the mobile barbershop for GambleAware said: “As barbers, we are used to our customers opening up to us about personal topics that they wouldn’t typically discuss. I’m looking forward to touring the country and chatting openly to fellow sports’ fans about their betting behavior, raising awareness about Bet Regret. We will be shining a spotlight on bets they might immediately regret, promoting conversations between friends, with the ambition of encouraging bettors to reduce higher risk betting so that their future betting is safer and less impulsive.”

Talking about the new and creative initiative Marc Etches, CEO of GambleAware said: “This is an important way to engage with communities across the country and open discussions with sports bettors, enabling them to consider the risks involved with betting and reflect on it. With our barbers, people will have the opportunity not only to receive a haircut but also develop their understanding of Bet Regret and consider their betting behavior in the future.”

Earlier last week, GambleAware had announced that it would be funding additional £3.9m for treatment of problem gambling. The funds would be allocated for the expansion of the National Gambling Treatment Service.
