Gaming Association Says Casino Gaming Industry Crucial For Mississippi’s Growth

Mississippi has recently liberalized its casino gambling industry and legalized sports gambling including mobile sports betting. While the American Gaming Association already welcomed the state’s decision, it has said that the casino gambling industry is crucial to the state’s development and growth.

The AGA concluded its study into the impacts of casino gambling across several US states. In its new study, the gaming association confirms that the casino gaming industry in the state ‘strengthens communities by providing good jobs, supporting small businesses and partnering with local charities.’

The casino gambling sector employs about 37,277 people and generates $1.6 bn in wages.

With legislature passing the Mississippi Gaming Control Act, authorizing dockside casino gaming along the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast in 1990, the industry has subsequently grown to occupy 29 commercial and tribal entities.

Mississipi sports betting revenue also grew by 1.7 percent in 2018 to $2.11 billion, up $44 million from 2017.

Chuck Cariker, mayor of Tunica, Mississippi, said: “[Without casinos,] we would be – and I don’t want to say the poorest county in the state of Mississippi – but we would be just like some other counties and towns that don’t have any gaming. We’d be struggling with infrastructure. We’d be struggling with tax rates.”

“Mississippi’s gaming industry has been a true leader nationally, demonstrating to the rest of the country how a policy framework focused on growth and opportunity can take the industry to new heights,” explained Bill Miller, president and CEO of the AGA.

“I’m amazed at how this industry, which began with dockside casinos, has expanded into an economic juggernaut for this state, turning around communities and supporting its neighbors at every turn.”
