Indian Fantasy Sports Platform Dream11 Eyeing At 100 Million Users By 2020

Dream 11, has emerged as the biggest fantasy sports platforms in India. Currently, the platform has around 65 million active users, and the company is eyeing at growing its user base to 100 million by 2020.

Inspired by the success with the current IPL season, the company is confident to touch those figures.

The most significant challenge for the fantasy sports platform has been to keep it a step ahead in the legal arena where it has continuously been hounded for being a gambling and betting platform.

However, Dream 11 has always maintained that their services are designed in a way that they don’t qualify as a game of but as a game of skill. The fantasy cricket betting platform has also been embroiled in controversies.

Gambling is illegal in India. While fantasy sports is legal in India, in some states, it is still not allowed.

Dream 11 co-founder, Bhavit Sheth, “This is not betting or gambling, but a game of skill. In 2017, when a lawyer filed a case against Dream11, saying it should be shut down, the Punjab and Haryana HC ruled that it’s not betting and gambling, but a game of skill and business protected under the Constitution of India. Then the lawyer appealed to the SC, but the petition was dismissed.”

With the over two weeks to go for the ICC cricket world cup, it may be just the right time to penetrate in the market. Experts estimate Indian fantasy sports market to be over 800 million users strong.
