Kenyan President Ready To Ban Gambling Altogether

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that he is in for putting a complete ban on gambling in the country.
While the Kenyan Government has gone tough on betting companies operating in the country, the president has expressed his desire to ban gambling altogether.

Earlier in July this year, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i issued a directive calling for vetting of betting companies and gambling establishments in the country.

Following the new directive, the country’s Betting Control and Licensing Board suspended the renewal of operational licenses for 19 betting companies including SportPesa, Betin, and Betway. The three companies together have an 85 percent share of Kenya’s sports betting market.

Spoke at Citam’s 60th-anniversary celebrations at the Karen sanctuary on Saturday, he told senators to present a bill to ban gambling and he would sign it.

“We have this thing called gambling in the country and it is terrible. I alone as Uhuru cannot change this trend. Go back to the constitution and change the laws,” he urged.

The president warned gambling and betting operators to comply with the country’s existing gambling regime while sending clear signals that gambling can be banned in the country.

The voices to replace Kenya’s 1960 gambling act has already been gaining grounds.

Kenya’s Sports, Culture and Tourism Committee chairman Victor Munyaka, has said that the 1960 gambling act is obsolete and that the government needs to come up with new gambling laws which would regulate all kinds of gambling operations in the country.
