Macau Gambling Regulator Says Use Of Facial Recognition Tech At Casinos Is Limited To Security

Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has said that the use of AI-based facial recognition technology at casinos is limited to security purposes only.

Recently, a Bloomberg report dismantled how many Chinese casinos have been using AI and facial recognition technology to predict customers willingness to take risks. Based on the facial recognition signals the casinos would profile customers who would display better ability to risks.

The report revealed that casinos in Macau collect data through concealed closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems, facial recognition technology, RFID-enabled chips, and specially designed baccarat tables.

Following the backlash and negative press after the article surfaced, the DICJ issued its clarification. It said that casinos in Macau do use AI and facial recognition technology, but that is limited to security purposes only.

It also said that if any gambling operator or casino is found to be using the technology apart from security purposes they would be violating the laws and would not be spared.

The gambling authority also said that any tests with AI-based facial recognition technology should strictly follow the city’s privacy protection laws.
