A massive fire broke out at the SkyCity Convention Center in downtown Auckland. The under-development project is also reportedly the country’s biggest current building project.
In a tweet, Auckland’ Mayor, Phil Goff, said that “Fire is really building. People can be seen on the roof.”
The fire and emergency crews are fighting to bring the blaze under control, the police said in a statement. The city police also confirmed that they were assisting Fire and Emergency NZ with cordons and evacuations of workers.
The people in the hotel have all been evacuated and there have been no reports of any injuries so far. “There have been no reported injuries,” SkyCity said on Twitter.
The Skycity tower and casino has been closed for an indefinite period until further notice.
The NZ$703-million ($452-million) SkyCity Convention Center, is an under-construction project on a 1.4-hectare (3.5-acre) site, with a floor space of 32,500 sq m (349,827 sq ft).
The majority of the people trapped inside are construction workers. The country’s largest builder, Fletcher Building Ltd is building the center.
Following the reports of the fire, the company’s shares were down 4 percent.
