US-based casino and gambling operator, Mohegan Gaming, has revealed its plans for the long-awaited Hellinikon casino in Athens, Greece.
The gambling operator has already partnered with a local company GEK Terna. There are two gambling operators in the race for the casino in Athens, Hard Rock International and Mohegan Gaming.
The 8-billion-euro casino-resort had been announced for long but the deadline for the proposals was extended several times due to multiple pending ministerial approvals.
The Casino site, Ellinikon International Airport was closed down in 2001. It had been one of the famous international airports in Greece for the last sixty years. Then following the crisis facing the country, as a part of the privatization policy that came in 2010, the airport site was planned to be redeveloped into an integrated resort.
Mario Kontomerkos, chief executive officer of Mohegan Gaming said the company has been working on the plan for more than two years and that all costing, land planning, and architectural work has been completed.
“We are ready to begin as soon as we receive all the necessary approvals,” he said. “We want to start as fast as possible.”
He also said that the construction work would be completed within 24-36 months and that it “will certainly comply within that timeline.”
While Mohegan has pledged to create about 7,000 jobs, the company said the casino will also boost tourism in Athens.
