Namibia Govt Plans To Revoke Gambling Licence Moratorium

The government in Namibia is planning to lift the moratorium on distributing gambling license in the country. The moratorium was imposed 20 years ago.

After the moratorium is lifted, the gambling operators in the country would be able to offer slot machine games legally.

Figures shared by the country’s Minister of Environment and Tourism (MET) Pohamba Shifeta, reveals that there are around 100 000 unlicensed gambling machines in the country hosted by over 3000 illegal gambling establishments of all shapes and sizes.

The government is planning to bring in a new and revised Gaming and Entertainment Control Act; currently, the gambling industry in Namibia is regulated under the Casinos and Gambling Houses Act of 1994.

Explaining the new legislation Minister of Environment and Tourism (MET) Pohamba Shifeta, said: “This piece of legislation will not only ensure strict regulation of gambling activities, but has new provisions to protect the public who participate in these activities, and the national economy.”

Under the new regulation, a central monitoring system would be created, and all gambling operators will be registered.

Talking of the new monitoring system, the minister said that it would help “detect and monitor significant events associated with gambling machines or any device associated with gambling machines that are made available for play in Namibia.”
