NCPG Publishes The National Survey of Gambling Attitudes and Gambling Experiences (NGAGE)

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), an organization dedicated to working towards helping problem gamblers and their family members has published the much awaited National Survey of Gambling Attitudes and Gambling Experiences (NGAGE).

It was in November 2018 that NCPG asked Ipsos, a global marketing and consulting company to study the US consumer behaviour towards different forms of gambling. With over 300, participants the entire survey helps to understand the issues related to problem gambling.

Keith Whyte, Executive Director of NCPG, said that “NGAGE is a big initiative for NCPG and will provide important baseline data as gambling, especially sports betting, continues in the U.S. In analyzing the data, we hope to understand problem gambling and people’s attitudes toward it better. The data will be a critical tool for advocates, industry, and legislators as they consider state-by-state sports betting initiatives, providing evidence to illuminate patterns of past behaviours as they consider possible future impacts. “We also expect that the data will bolster our efforts to gain support for better access to treatment and services for those affected by problem gambling and gambling addiction.”

The study asked participants questions related to getting involved with gambling, about sports betting and fantasy sports betting, the problems in the behaviour of players, and what are their ideas and opinion about problem gambling.
While it is not surprising that a significant majority of Americans support responsible gambling; however, 63% opined that the gambling and casino operators should take measures to ensure responsible gambling.

Don Feeney, Gambling Policy Consultant for National Council on Problem Gambling and President of Northstar Problem Gambling Alliance, “We’ve learned that almost three-quarters of the American public likes to gamble now and then and that most do so responsibly. However, there is a small but significant number who are indulging in risky practices or who don’t understand how gambling works. As we continue to analyze the data we anticipate learning more about these people and how we can help reduce their risks.”
