On Friday, The Press of Atlantic City shared a report about the unionization of the workers of Ocean Resort Casino. The Atlantic city hotel and casino resort which are to change their owners partnered with Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City last June.
Almost 74% eligible employees of Ocean signed authorization forms stating their intent to make a union which was approved by New Jersey State of Mediation past Thursday. This step contributed in bringing its completion closer.
Federal law allows the employer to recognize the formation of union if there are 50% cards signed by the workers of that company.
UNIITE HERE, labor union, Local 54 members are responsible for representation of over 1300 employees of Ocean Resort Casino. 8500 workforce of Atlantic City’s operational hotel consisting of housekeepers, bartenders, cocktail servers, and chefs is represented by 54 members.
Bob McDevitt, President of Local 54 said that the “overwhelming” number of signatures directed to the Mediation Board satisfied them as deemed it as a step towards development. He commented that the labor union will further converse with Ocean Resort Casino as they “acted in good faith”.
Ongoing Negotiations With Hard Rock
On 27th June 2018, Ocean Resort Casino and Hard Rock Atlantic City both stepped in Atlantic City casino market. Last September, negotiations were made between union and casino as Local 54 is the responsible for negotiating for over 1500 workforce.
On Friday, Mr. McDevitt informed about the negotiations with Hard Rock and then proceeding to Ocean Resort Casino. The Local 54 stated that they wanted to secure Hard Rock contract first.
Hard Rock Atlantic City occupies space in Trump Taj Mahal. It launched during the tenure of US President Donald Trump in early 1990s. By late 2000s Trump completely detached from it and then Carl Icahn, New York billionaire investor, got hold of it.
Fall 2016 saw closure of Trump Taj Mahal due to strike of its unionized workers. Mr. Icahn reasoned for its closure as the disagreement of employees of casino resort and labor unions.
