Queensland Interested In Exploring A Second Casino In Gold Coast

One major topic of debate in the tourism and entertainment industry over the years in Australia is the possibility of expanding a casino in the Gold Coast. Recently, Queensland has begun to show interest in the possibility of establishing a second casino resort within the area. In the light of this, it is offering casino operators the opportunity to have a say in the matter. Operators within the gaming and hospitality industry have the chance to offer their view on the subject before the end of April.

On Tuesday, the government initiated an EOI (expression of interest) process to enable developers submit their interest on operating and constructing a second casino resort around the Star Gold Coast, which is situated in the suburb of Boadbeach. According to the Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development, Kate Jones, a search is being conducted and the government is exploring the best approach to improve the hospitality and entertainment being offered in the Gold Coast.

This improvement will be an aspect of the plan to develop a Global Tourism Hub, something close to what is obtainable with the integrated resorts of Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE). The hub will include convention facilities, entertainment venues, high end food and beverage destination, luxury hotel, and retail stores. Additionally, the hub is expected to have its own gaming capacity. According to Kate Jones, the Queensland Government plans to cap the whole facility at five percent of the total area of the property. It is important to mention that this same limitation was employed for the incorporated resort that is being created in the Beisbane’s Queen Wharf.

According to the initial forecasts, the Global Tourism Hub (GHT) will attract about one million additional tourists to the destination every year. It has also been forecasted that the hub will create about six thousand local jobs, which means it is indeed a game changer in the world of tourism and entertainment.

However, the GHT has met with significant opposition from the anti-gambling community who believe that establishing another casino is a sure way to further destroy the area. According to the Alliance for Gambling Reforms representative, Stephen Mayne, Queensland is the 2nd worst off state in Australia in terms of losses accrued to gambling with an average of $1,000AUD recorded per an individual.

In addition to this, the owner of the casino resort in Broadbeach, Star Entertainment Group, has also expressed their reservation. However, many believe that the reason for the company’s disputes against a second casino is the potential loss of revenue that will occur at the launch of the new casino.

Other international casino operators who already expressed their interest to establish casino resorts in Australia’s Gold Coast will probably initiate their plans through the introduction of the EoI scheme. Top among these operators are Caesars Entertainment and Hard Rock International.
