A bill to make mobile sports betting legal was already passed by the house earlier this month. The Rhode Island had just one step to go to make Moblie Sports betting legal.
Mobile sports betting is now legal in Rhode Island as Governor Gina Raimondo signed it earlier today as informed by the general assembly in a statement released to the press. With this new law in effect, Rhode Island also becomes the first New England state to allow sports betting.
At present, the bets on sports events are to be placed in person and only at the Twin River Casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton.
The bill to make mobile sports betting legal in the Rhode islands was initiated by Democratic Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and Democratic House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello. The motivation to introduce such a bill was to gross more tax revenues from mobile sports betting and also make betting reasonably easy for players.
The approval from Gov Gina Raimondo was very obvious. She also has a budget of $3 million from mobile gaming for the FY starting July 1.
According to the new regulation an app will be created to let users access mobile sports betting. However, the bets could be made only from the twin river casinos. Also, those who place a stake must be physically present in Rhode Islands at the time of the wager.
