Senate Approves Sports Betting At Tribal Casinos In North Carolina

Two Indian Casinos in North Carolina had been seeking to allow sports betting and horse wagering. The gambling venues now have the approval of the North Carolina Senate to offer both sports betting and horse wagers.

The Senate Voted 43-7 in favor of Senate Bill 154 which seeks to allow the two Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian Casinos offer sports betting and horse wagers. Now the bill will have to be approved by the house.

The existing laws allow the two Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian Casinos to offer live poker, slot machines, and video-style games.

Richard Sneed, Eastern Band Principal Chief had said in an interview earlier that sports betting will help the patrons procure new amenities.

The lawmakers also agreed as they think the new move will help the state gross more tax revenue.

Senator Jim Davis, who had introduced the bill to the Senate, said: “It is expected it will enhance the revenue of the tribe [by] about $14 million a year and that will yield about $1 million for the state.”

In New Mexico, two tribal casinos are already offering sports betting. Unlike the Cherokee Band, they did not require any permission from the Senate owing to a binding pact with the state.
