Seniors At Risk With Wynn’s Encore Boston Harbor Casino: City Councilor

Wynn Resorts’ ambitious project – Encore Boston Harbor Casino – is all set and ready to welcome guests from June 23. The company has already paid $35 million in penalty which was imposed by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission for not reporting the multiple complaints of sexual misconduct against its former CEO Steve Wynn; they have also paid the fine slapped on their present CEO Matthew Maddox, who was found to be complicit in veiling the allegations even when the inquiry was ongoing.

After that, the company briefly entered into talks with gaming and hospitality giant MGM resorts and the reports of a potential sale of Wynns Encore Casino surfaced. However, clearing the air, a day after the reports emerged, citing stakeholders concerns, MGM resorts made it clear that they have pulled out of any such talks with Wynn Resorts. MGM also operates the Springfield casino in the state, and according to the license agreement with the gaming commission, no operator can have two casino licenses.

Now that Wynn Resorts have confirmed that they will be welcoming guests at their Encore Boston Harbor casino from June 23, Boston City Councilor Althea Garrison has expressed concerns and has said that the new Boston Harbor casino will negatively impact the citizenry and especially senior citizens.

She has also been vocal about the impact of casinos on senior citizens and has raised concerns during the last city council meeting.

Expressing her concerns, Garrison said: “I foresee this being a major issue for residents of Boston. Senior citizens are traditionally the most loyal customers to casinos.”

“They use manipulation tactics and resources to get their money,” said Garrison. We need to eradicate predatory marketing to seniors and find concrete ways to help seniors,” she asserted.

Statistics from the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) reveals that the senior citizens are the most vulnerable to problem gambling. Stats show that over 50 percent of the gamblers at US casinos are above the age of fifty.

Earlier last week, Wynn resorts also secured permissions to serve alcoholic beverages until 4 am in the morning – usually casinos can serve alcoholic beverages until 2 am.
