The 50th Annual World Series of Poker tournament will be going down from May 28 to July 16 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, and the organizers have confirmed that short deck hold’em will be making a debut in the competition.

In a statement, the VP of corporate communication for WSOP, Seth Palansky, said that the tournament is never afraid of trying a new format of poker, whether it succeeds or flops later on. He proceeded to give an example of how dealer’s choice evolved to become a hit with players, while ante-only no-limit hold’em wasn’t much of a success.

Palansky also said that the WSOP looks forward to adding more schedules to the tournament each year, depending on the market demands. In his opinion, short deck will be an easy sell during the event.

Tournament to take place on June 2

The premier short deck hold’em at WSOP 2019 is set to take place on June 2, starting at 6 pm. The events will feature a $10k buy-in contest and losers will be able to give the tournament one more shot thanks to a single re-entry option.

According to the WSOP, the $10,000 price point is ideal because a majority of the players who are familiar with the game are high-rollers. The tournament brass has also said that this group of players are the ones who are most hungry for a short deck schedule, and they will also be best suited to provide a rigorous testing exercise for the event’s best practices.

Operational challenges are expected

As is the norm with new schedules, the WSOP anticipates some operational challenges when short deck hold’em makes its debut in June this year. The sentiments were voiced by the VP of Corporate Communications. He also said that the WSOP will count on the feedback from players to help it resolve any arising challenges. The tournament organizers will also be using the lessons they learnt from the addition of the big blind ante in 2018.

The WSOP will be releasing more details including the exact structure sheet in due time though there is speculation of a four days schedule. Also, player feedback will go a long way in shaping the regulator’s decisions concerning the format. As at now, the only thing players can be sure about is the $10k buy-in with a single re-entry option and a starting stack of 60,000.
