Spanish Teens Most Addicted To Gambling In Europe

While gambling addiction has been on the rise in most regulated gambling jurisdictions in Europe, a study reveals that Spanish teens demonstrate the highest gambling addiction rate in Europe.

A joint study of Spain’s Federation of Rehabilitated Gamblers and Madrid’s Association of Psychologists reveal that one out of every five Spanish youth is addicted to gambling.

Moreover, those between the age of 14 to 21 demonstrate a higher affinity for sports gambling than their European counterparts.

With the shocking findings, both the Federation of Rehabilitated Gamblers and Madrid’s Association of Psychologists are campaigning for imposing restrictions on gambling adverts and gambling operators.

The report also reveals that the number of betting houses in the capital Madrid has risen three-fold since 2013.

Recently, the country’s civic ombudsman called for restricting gambling ads. Following which, Spain’s Ministry of Finance has approved the recommendations made by the civic Ombudsman. As such, Spain may ban gambling adverts in the country.

Moreover, Spain’s Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ), the country’s gambling regulator announced that its sports betting licensees “will not be able to include in their program of events those that are played exclusively or predominantly by minors.”

The DGOJ said that the new measure is “based on the best interests of the minor.” The gambling watchdog said that it wants to ensure the “healthy participation” of kids in sports.
