Land-based legalized sports betting in Washington D.C would not be possible before the start of the upcoming football season.
While the preseason is ongoing, the football season starts from September 5.
D.C.’s Office of Lottery and Gaming has confirmed that the launch of sports betting operations would get delayed by at least a few weeks. Earlier it was announced that it could be open before the NFL season.
The Office of Lottery and Gaming will begin accepting applications for sports gaming licenses in September.
The applications for r provisional licenses could be approved in 30-45 days. The process to award standard licenses would take anywhere in between three to six months.
The rules related to sports gambling in DC is yet to be formulated.
In a statement to WTOP, the Office of Lottery and Gaming said it is “committed to establishing a solid regulatory framework that fosters public confidence and trust in the integrity of sports wagering operations in the D.C.”
Several US states have legalized sports gambling after the US Supreme Court allowed states to regulate sports betting.
Since the beginning of this year over 8 states have legalized sports betting and many others the legislation is pending approval.
Earlier this week, the NFL also asked its employees to follow the league’s gambling policies. It should be noted that the NFL has always opposed the move to legalize sports betting.
