Sports Gambling Legalized In North Carolina

North Carolina has green signaled sports betting operations in a major shift in policy towards gambling expansion in the state. On Friday, NC Governor Roy Cooper officially approved the Senate Bill 154 (SB 154) legalizing sports betting operations in the state.

Following the legalization of the sports gambling bill, two casinos owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are now able to offer sportsbooks. The legislation is classified as Class III gaming in North Carolina and the current laws are amended to include sports betting.

There are two Cherokee casino resorts in North Carolina – Harrah’s Cherokee and Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River. Both gambling venues are operated by Caesars Entertainment. The tribe would now be in control of the sports betting operations at the two gambling establishments.

The number of US states legalizing sports betting operations has been on the rise after the US supreme court legalized sports betting the previous year. Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the states are now allowed to offer sports betting in their jurisdictions regardless of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) interventions.

Earlier in April, NC legislators have approved a bill to legalize casino nights for charities. the house of representatives voted 95-17 in favor of the bill.

Lawmakers in favor of the bill have said that it was not fair to keep charities from organizing such events.
