An association of gambling operators in Sweden, Branschföreningen för Onlinespel (BOS) has urged the country’s gambling regulator to address the issues facing online gambling operators in the country as there are several who have fined for alleged breach of the revised gambling regulations.
The operator association has also sought an immediate meeting with the gambling regulator to address the issue.
BOS secretary general Gustaf Hoffstedt wrote to Spelinspektionen and raised his concerns about the future regulatory environment in Sweden. He also noted that in a situation where the interpretation of the Gambling Act is so open that many operators are failing to comply unintentionally, it would be challenging for the entire gambling industry.
In his letter, Hoffstedt wrote, “upholding the integrity of sport, protecting minors from undue harm and – more generally – complying fully with regulatory obligations associated with holding a Swedish gambling license”.
“However, in order to be able to do this, it is imperative that the regulator provides clear and detailed guidance on what is expected of operators in order to be fully compliant with the regulations.”
He also mentioned that the gambling operators had already asked the Swedish gambling regulator Spelinspektionen for a clear interpretation of regulations regarding restrictions about betting markets in events involving under 18s.
Earlier today, GIG a gaming and online gambling company pulled its sportsbooks from the Swedish market and temporarily stopped operations citing similar reasons.
