UK Gambling Commission Dismisses Watson’s Call For Reviewing Gambling Licenses

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has dismissed labour party’s deputy leader’s call for reviewing gambling licenses of operators who received their licenses prior to 2014.

Earlier in May, Tom Watson, the Deputy Leader of the UK’s Labour Party, asked the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) to cancel the gambling licenses of all online gambling operators who got their licenses after 2014.

Concerned with the malpractices in the UK gambling industry, Watson wrote a letter representing the Labour Party to the UKGC CEO, Neil McArthur, and Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright. He highlighted the lack of social responsibility and honesty on the part of the online gambling operators.

Though the UKGC dismissed Watson’s call for reviewing the licenses, they said that they do acknowledge the lawmaker’s demand for creating a gambling Ombudsman.

Last week, Watson also called for creating a gambling Ombudsman to protect customers. He opined that the current state of affairs has failed the customers.

UKGC Chief Executive, Neil McArthur, said that the review of licenses of online gambling operators is not necessary as the licenses are subject to regular risk assessment and for those which have been failing to comply there has been strict scrutiny of such operators.
