UK Gambling Commission: Loot Boxes Are Not Gambling

Uk Gambling Commission has once again said that Loot Boxes are not gambling. Loot Boxes are unique features in video games and apps which allow a user to unlock rewards upon payment or after performing a particular task.

Even earlier in November 2018, the UK Gambling Commission had said that loot boxes are not gambling as there was no convincing and direct link between loot boxes and gambling.

BBC reports Gambling Commission chief executive Neil McArthur reiterating that despite “significant concerns” about children being involved with games that offer loot boxes, under the existing regulations and gambling laws, loot boxes do not qualify as gambling.

“There are other examples of things that look and feel like gambling that legislation tells you are not—[such as] some prize competitions but because they have free play or free entry they are not gambling… but they are a lot like a lottery,” McArthur said.

Gambling addiction amongst children and teenagers is on the rise in the UK. A recent report found that there has been a 400 percent increase in minors having compulsive gambling issues, in the past two years.

As per the report, the number of children between 11 to 16 years of age having compulsive gambling issues is approximately 55, 000.

The report reveals that over 70,000 young children are at risk. It also estimates that 450,000 children indulge in gambling activities and place wagers more often. This is to say that one in every seven children between 11 to 16 years participates in gambling activities.
