Victoria’s Ethnic Communities’ Council Says There Is ‘Urgent need’ To Tackle Gambling Problems

Gambling is quite popular in Australia, and as the market is expanding, so is gambling addiction. The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria has called for tackling gambling problems in the country and has said that it is urgent.

Reports suggest that on an average Australians spend $24 billion on gambling in just one year. According to the estimates from last year, Australian adults remain the biggest spenders in the gambling industry worldwide. The overall gambling losses of adult Australian citizen in 2017 amounted to AU$1,324.

The council said that migrants and other ethnic groups are more vulnerable to gambling problems. “There is an urgent need as we’ve seen the harm from gambling has affected a large number of communities, particularly communities from a culturally linguistically diverse background.”

“They feel lonely at home, isolated if they don’t have other support services, such as a network they look link up it. They feel going to the venue gives them an opportunity. It’s warm particularly on a cold day.”

Earlier last month, Victoria became the first Australian state to adopt the national framework on gambling by bringing in new measures and revising gambling laws.

The national framework was first created in December 2018. The governments of six Australian states, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia had agreed to create and adopt common gambling policies to ensure better standards of consumer protection in the Aussie gambling industry.
